So my function in anything I do is to help bring people closer in.”– Gord Downie, to The Winnipeg Free Press, May 31, 2016 The language, the imagery – whatever it means – speaks to us. He said in a 2012 appearance on CBC’s Q, “I’m interested in how the words make me feel, and trying to capture them in a certain way, and not screw with them too much not let my intellect diminish the creative power.” So even if his lyrics could be enigmatic, there was a feeling that came through. (In addition to penning literate song lyrics, Downie was, of course, a published poet – having released a best-selling collection of verse, Coke Machine Glow, in 2001). It’s clear from his writing, and even from the way he spoke, that Downie saw the world through a poet’s eyes. And consider one of the band’s most beloved songs, “Ahead by a Century,” where Downie’s lyrics play with time and tense in an almost cubist way past, present and future overlapping like images emerging through thin veils of wax paper. But they could also be shrewdly poignant (“Well, she was nineteen seventy / Burning like a cigarette long season”). ![]() Spitting from a bridge just to see how far down it really is (“Cordelia”) or the “dangerous tug” we feel when looking over the edge from on high (“Gift Shop”). Tragically Hip songs introduce us to some fascinating and extraordinary viewpoints.ĭownie’s lyrics often plumbed certain kinds of experiences – visceral and furtive – and re-cast them with poetic aplomb. We’re privy to a confession from the survivor of a nautical disaster. We’re in a club watching a stripper collapse in a coughing fit. We’re plunging over the falls in a barrel. Though Downie’s lyrics were often oblique and cryptic, there’s something to be said about the places he took us. While eschewing easy jingoism or flag-draped nationalism, they told stories about us and the places we live – joyous and painful, epic and esoteric, mountainous-magnificent and small-town weird. ![]() The music of Gord Downie and the Hip connects us to ourselves, not only as human beings, but also more specifically to ourselves as Canadians. It lets us know we’re not alone in experiencing life’s ups and downs. The best songwriting connects us to something. “Bobcaygeon,” “Wheat Kings,” “38 Years Old,” “At the Hundredth Meridian,” “Ahead by a Century,” “Fifty-Mission Cap,” “New Orleans is Sinking,” to name a few. By doing that, many of the Hip’s songs achieved cultural iconic status in Canada the campfire song seal of approval. How? By following the old adage: write what you know, write who you are. The Tragically Hip, with Downie as their poet, wrote songs that tapped into the soul of a nation. All across the country, we were all floating in that Great Lake of Tears. A few feet to my right there was a woman with her hands to her mouth, her eyes brimming. After the band played their last note and the members took their bows, Gord Downie remained alone on stage, saying goodbye. On that night, I was among the capacity crowd at the Legendary Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto, watching the swan song concert on the bar’s TV screens. ![]() ![]() The CBC broadcast of the band’s final hometown Kingston concert on their Man Machine Poem tour, on August 20, 2016, what many felt certain to be their farewell tour, was viewed by more than 11 million Canadians – about one-third of the population. 1 singles, 13 Top 10 singles and 16 JUNO Awards. The impact of the Tragically Hip’s music on Canadians is also, like that Great Lake of Tears, immense and deep: Nine No. Enough tears fell to create a sixth Great Lake, immense and deep. When he passed away on Octoat the age of 53, a nation came together to mourn our loss. On May 24, 2016, we learned that Gord Downie, lead singer and lyricist for the Tragically Hip, had incurable brain cancer. The HDD fan speed use to have a range from 1200 rpm to 5500 a few weeks ago. I went to the control and realize the slowest speed for all fans have change which explain the noise. ![]() Since a few weeks ago, fans speed are always faster and makes noise. I am using Mac Fan Control for several years on an iMac when the HDD was replaced by an SDD. Discovered that when booted from a USB drive, starting the SSD Fan Control daemon causes the SSD to entirely disappear from the System Information – hence the freeze when booted from the SSD itself.Ĭhris Upton: did the proposed solution fix the problem? Just encountered the same problem as Hugh. It took me a long time to isolate, but manually starting the daemon consistently froze the system. Has anyone else had the problem with SSD Fan Control or Macs Fan Control whereby the daemon freezes the system (keyboard and mouse have no effect, and spinning beachball of death spins until power cycle). I have 8GB of RAM and a 500GB SSD drive in mine. Love the 2011 iMac!! So upgradable and I still love the optical drive. This will blow out some dust and then you can set the fan speed at a more normal speed to keep your iMac cool. Set the fan speed to 100% (but not for too long). Not very good ones here in Central FL and I don’t want to take back off. I don’t want to take it to a computer tech. The fans used to come on at full speed occasionally to blow dust out but they haven’t for two years. It was getting hot to the touch and I blew the top slit with compressed air, also in the back. Is there a way I can make them come on HIGH. Randy, I want my fans to come on at full speed to blow the dust out. Just follow the OWC video and you’ll do well. At some point I’m going to add 4 more GB of memory and I figure I’ll be able to use this machine for a few more years. No fan noise and the new SSD was much more responsive. Finally I updated to macOS High Sierra (can’t go any higher on the mid-2011), and the machine ran like a clock. I bent the Display Port Cable initially and had to order another one from ebay. Display Port Cable (not too difficult to disconnect but quite difficult to reattach). Now you have the four cables to disconnect: So, off comes the glass (you really don’t need suction cups), and after eight screws out comes the screen. I did not want to pay the $39.00 but I wanted to do the upgrade the right way and I knew that a hardware solution to the fan problem was the right way to go. I did not want to control the fans via a software solution so I “bit the bullet” and bought the $39.00 OWC In-Line Digital Thermal Sensor Cable. I also had to be constantly adjusting the smcFanControl settings.Ībout two months ago I decided to go with an SSD drive and I chose the Crucial MX500 SSD. I choose smcFanControl and I was fairly satisfied but I did notice that the back of the iMac still got very hot to the touch. I certainly didn’t want to open the thing back up so I went with a software solution. ![]() It therefore ran the fan speed at 100% all the time. My new drive had no temperature sensor on it, so my iMac motherboard didn’t know what the HD temperature was. In contrast, a U-shaped age-related pattern was revealed in judgments of acts as well as the right to engage in acts in the conflicted situations with 8- and 16-year-olds judging acts as wrong and 10- to 14-year-olds more likely to judge acts as right and the actor as having a right to engage in the action. Cross-age continuities in moral judgments were observed in judgments of acts as wrong in the unconflicted contexts. Justifications were elicited for judgments. Participants made two types of judgments: whether the action was right or wrong and whether the actor would have a right to engage in the action if that was the actor's choice. Situations varied in terms of characteristics of the person who was the object of moral decisions: a generic other, vulnerable other, or antagonistic other. Each situation was presented within three conditions: unconflicted situations situations of conflict with needs of self and conflicts with needs of another. Moral judgments were assessed through interviews around issues of direct harm (hitting), indirect harm (returning dropped money), and helping. Participants were 167 children and adolescents drawn from two regions of the United States, from diverse ethnic and SES backgrounds, distributed across four age groups from 8 to 17 years. The aims of the research presented here were to examine moral judgments in childhood and adolescence, taking into account applications of moral judgments in contexts and the coordination of different considerations in evaluations and decisions. That research indicates that there are continuities and discontinuities across ages in moral judgments.
